A modern home with brocante

AN AUTHENTIC ATMOSPHERE created by beautiful stories

The first time Bjørn and Roger visited this house was on a sunny afternoon. The front door was opened and the sun was shining through the colored glass windows. The hallway was beautifully illuminated and the old floor tiles made the couple fall in love with the building immediately.

This house was constructed in 1932 and for many years, it was a small hotel. The owners divided the hotel into two separate houses and the couple now lives in one of them. They bought the house in November, started a large-scale renovation project and moved in six months later. Sadly, the hallway is the only room in the house with original elements but they have obviously been preserved.

The couple runs their own brocante store so they immediately noticed all the possibilities offered by this building. The house is big enough for them, their two sons and the brocante store, and they also have a big garden.

What they love most about the house is that the walls are so tall and that the house offers enough room for them to live, work and relax. Although many of the original details are no longer there, the couple has managed to create an authentic atmosphere where everybody feels at home. Bjørn and Roger recommend that you follow your heart. Do whatever you prefer and enjoy it. It’s better to buy one nice, large and more expensive item that 10 small bits and bobs. And you should always try to buy from local stores.

They both had a keen interest in interior design and recycling before they met. Bjørn had been visiting flea markets for many years, hunting for nice and useable things, and Roger had developed a similar interest over the years. Old items come with a story, have a soul and are often handmade and unique, and that’s something they both love. All the items in their home have a special place in their hearts. They’ve collected the items during their shopping trips and they’ve invested lots of time and work collecting them. Many of the items are up for sale but it takes time to sell them so the couple can enjoy them in the meantime. The couple has been running their own brocante store ever since they met in 2011. Their biggest, private passion is to collect old, German Christmas decoration items.

The company is called "Fauquemont Brocante" and the house offers a showroom that you can visit if you call ahead of time. In addition, the couple has a stall at the big antiques and flea market in Benelux in Tongeren (Belgium) each Sunday and you can also find them at various castle fairs throughout the year.
